Patterson has two more years of eligibility. “This time was a lot harder to pull the plug and be like, ‘I’m actually leaving just because it’s like wherever you go now is the end-all, be-all,” Patterson told the newspaper. Patterson said he didn’t envision a future as a wildcat quarterback and that weighed heavily in his decision to leave Fargo. “I’m not oblivious and I know after winning a national championship it ’s kind of hard to bench whoever you won it with.” “I was thinking about the idea of me leaving really since the end of the season,” Patterson told The Forum last week. He totaled 113 carries for 660 yards and seven touchdowns and completed 55 of 101 passes for 813 yards, with six touchdown passes and four interceptions. Patterson was utilized in a package that featured his running ability in the latter part of the season and made some big plays in the playoffs. But he was replaced by Miller in the middle of the seventh game and Coach Matt Entz stayed with Miller for the rest of the season. Patterson won the starting job this past fall and the Bison won each of his seven starts.

With Miller at the helm, the three-time defending champs lost in the quarterfinal round of the FCS playoffs. Patterson left Virginia Tech before the end of the 2020 season and joined North Dakota State in the spring but was not eligible to participate in its Spring 2021 season. He completed 22 of 52 passes for 359 yards, with four touchdown passes and one interception. He was more productive as a runner than a passer, totaling 74 carries for 333 yards and four touchdowns over those three seasons. In three years at Virginia Tech, Patterson started once and played in 13 games for the Hokies. Williams was on the coaching staff at Virginia Tech when Patterson played there. Patterson told The Forum of Fargo-Moorhead that he received immediate interest from Temple, Memphis, Hawaii, and Troy, among others.ĮSPN reported that Patterson pointed to Coach Stan Drayton, offensive coordinator Danny Langsdorf, and wide receivers coach Jafar Williams as three key figures in why he picked Temple in a matter of one week. Patterson entered the transfer portal just last week following a spring practice competition with Cam Miller, who started North Dakota State’s last eight games in 2021.
